History of the American Eagle
The American Eagle program was created by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, and the first coins were struck in 1986 in four sizes: 1 ounce, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 ounce. The United States thus equipped itself with its own gold investment coin to compete with the South African Krugerrand and the Canadian Maple Leaf.
The obverse features the Walking Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the 1907 gold 20-dollar coin. The reverse originally depicted a family of eagles, designed by Miley Busiek, which was replaced in 2021 by an eagle's head designed by Jennie Norris. Until 1991, the year was inscribed in Roman numerals.
How to identify a 1/4 oz American Eagle?
The obverse shows Lady Liberty full-length, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol building in the background, the word "LIBERTY," and the year. Depending on the year, the reverse features either the eagle family or the eagle's head, along with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD," and "10 DOLLARS."
Verification involves checking the weight (8.48 g), diameter (22 mm), thickness (1.83 mm), and the sharpness of the engraving and reeded edge. Its slightly warmer tone compared to pure gold, due to the alloy, is normal. Our experts perform these checks on every coin before it is offered for sale.
Why invest in the 1/4 oz American Eagle?
- Exactly one quarter ounce: 7.78 g of fine gold, a value that is easy to calculate based on the daily gold price.
- A format for investing step by step: four coins equal one ounce, and each can be resold separately.
- An official coin: its gold weight and fineness are guaranteed by the United States Mint.
- A robust alloy: 22-karat gold resists scratches better than pure gold.
A "marketable" inspected 1/4 oz American Eagle, ready for resale
The 1/4 oz American Eagle is sold for the gold it contains. Its price follows the gold market, to which an investment premium is added. As investment gold, it is exempt from VAT in Belgium.
- Inspected as "marketable": every coin is verified by our experts (authenticity, weight, fineness). It has no defects that would prevent its resale as investment gold: no holes, solder, traces of mountings, significant dents, or excessive wear.
- Ready for resale: the day you sell it, it is accepted as investment gold based on its fine gold weight. We guarantee its repurchase at any time.
Year and condition of your 1/4 oz American Eagle
This product is sold in "mixed years": the mint date and reverse design vary from one coin to another and cannot be chosen. These are circulated coins that have already had one or more owners: slight signs of wear or patina are normal and have no effect on their investment value, which is calculated based on their fine gold weight. How to store your 1/4 oz American Eagles?
For a gold coin to retain its full resale value, a few simple precautions are sufficient:
- handle it by the edge, ideally with cotton gloves;
- never clean it: cleaning agents and friction scratch the gold and can complicate its resale;
- store it in an individual capsule or case, protected from humidity and impacts;
- keep your purchase invoice, as it is useful at the time of resale.
Frequently asked questions about the 1/4 oz American Eagle
Is the 1/4 oz American Eagle made of pure gold?
No. It is made of 22-karat gold (916.7 thousandths), alloyed with silver and copper. It nevertheless contains exactly one quarter ounce of fine gold (7.78 g); its total weight is 8.48 g.
What is the difference from the old 10 Dollar gold coin?
The 10 Dollar Eagle minted until 1933 is a different coin: it contains 15.05 g of fine gold at 900 thousandths. The modern 10 dollar American Eagle contains one quarter ounce, or 7.78 g.
Can I choose the year?
No. This product is sold in mixed years: you will receive a 1/4 oz American Eagle selected from our stock, which always contains one quarter ounce of fine gold.
Is the American Eagle subject to VAT?
No. In Belgium, as in the entire European Union, the 1/4 oz American Eagle is considered investment gold and is exempt from VAT.
